7 Ways For Your Music to Get More Listeners

Are you a band interested in gaining some more exposure? Well I’m sure you’re doing a couple of these things at the moment, but to be gaining fans and getting more listeners of your music there are 7 tips to give you a hand!

1/ A Myspace Account
This is a MUST for any band or musician, myspace has become the tool. You don’t even need a website any more, just a myspace with your songs uploaded , perhaps some pictures as well.

2/ Gig Gig Gig
Yeah so you may think you’re the next Guns n Roses, but you’ve got to gig everywhere and anywhere you can. A promoter once told me that “there are so many bands around now, so it’s sometimes impossible to pull out the needle from the haystack”. Gig your ass off, gain some followers, have CDs to sell at gigs and flyers with your myspace page on it.

3/ Youtube
Link your myspace with a youtube account. Put up some videos of you at venues (get a friend to record you with a cheap camera if nothing else), and record yourself doing an acoustic song in front of your PC as a sort of special song for the fans. This can help to gain fans and exposure, as well as keeping your current fans sweet.

4/ Contact Unsigned Bands Sites
There are lots of websites out there to help Unsigned Bands. Just search for unsigned bands in google and have a little look through (don’t just click on the first one or two! – have a proper dig through and see what the sites have to offer). Doing this can find competitions, opportunities and more.

A lot of Music mag websites also feature unsigned bands as well, so that’s also something to try.

5/ Enter Competitions
There are so many competitions out there for unsigned bands. A lot of them are even done via the net. Many of them may not seen like huge deals, but they will offer more exposure and some offer radio play as a reward. You can find these again by searching google or using social sites such as twitter to listen out for things.

6/ Use Twitter and Tweetdeck
Make a twitter account and then set up searches for “your band name” “music  your location” – eg “killers” “music london” and similar searches like “bands london”, “unsigned bands”. Leave tweetdeck on in the background and whenever somebody posts anything with those keywords, you will be able to view it. Twitter is becoming more and more popular and this is a great way to find local venues that wants bands, music sites, or competitions. It’s also a good way of seeing if anybody is talking about you and what they have to say.

7/ The Radio
So you may not be able to instantly get your music played on the radio, but that is the aim. Air play = more fans = more money. That is the basic principle of air time and why it works so well.
BBC Introducing is a great avenue to try and use, although it can be difficult to get played. Internet radio stations can be listened to by tens of thousands of people as well, so get in touch with them and ask them to play your track – most of them will.

So there are my 7 top tips for musicians looking for a little bit of extra exposure. I hope you enjoyed and please keep checking back for more articles in the future.

The Six Sigma Music Business: Keep Your Audiences Coming Back for More!

Six Sigma? What could a statistical math term possibly have to do with music? Well I could bore you with a long answer on the statistical benefits, or I could explain it in one simple sentence.

Six Sigma is about quality, service, and making sure that your customers or “audiences” keep coming back for more! Would you like your audiences to come back for more?

The more your audiences come back to see you;

The more of your music they purchase.
The more concert tickets you sell.
The more promotional items you sell.
The more venue’s you fill.
The more publicity you get.
The more money you earn!

Of course you want your audiences to come back for more! Every musician wants to have his or her music appreciated. Every musician wants to sell more albums and more concert tickets.

So what does six sigma have to do with that? Using six sigma techniques provides you with a clear understanding of what your customers expect. It helps you identify who your customers or audiences are and ensures you reach them.

Does six sigma mean you change your music to accommodate the masses? Well of course not! Your music is your creative essence. The key to success is not to change your music to fit the wrong audience, the key is to reach the right audience and make sure they always know where, when, and how to find you.

Do you actually know who your customers are? Can you tell me where they come from? How they found you? Or even what it is that they like about you, your music, or your work?

Most musicians and bands that I come across always say the same thing! “Of course we do!” Yet when I ask them how their audience found them they would always answer “At the bar!” When I asked for specifics I always got the same answer! “I don’t know”.

The key to music success is knowing who your audience is and how to reach them. If you where a Gospel Singer, where would you most likely find an audience that appreciates your music, in a church or a Jazz bar? I know, I made it a bit obvious but rest assured it is not always that clear.

Ok, so I said that six sigma means quality! What does that imply? Well in general terms six sigma means that out of 1,000,000 occurrences no more then 3.4 have defects. Looking at it from the music industry point of view it could mean that:

For every 1,000,000 people that hear you sing all but 3 want more!
For every 1,000,000 concerts that you perform all but 3 sell out completely!
For every 1,000,000 albums you sell all but 3 customers want to buy more of your albums.

Do I need to go on? I think you pretty much have the idea! Think of the possibilities. A large audience full of very happy people or “customers”. How much money is that worth? Its mind boggling!

Ok, I know, the next question is always, “Why just 3, why not 4, 5, or even 100 out of 1,000,000, it is still a very small percentage of the total?”

Yes that is true and it is often the most common mistake that anyone in the industry can make. The key to understand this is in recognizing that it is impossible to actually measure lost opportunities. The one person that left your concert in disgust could have represented the record label that would have sold the largest quantity of your albums.

Many years ago companies where targeting the three sigma level of quality. This translates to about 2,700 defects per million. Consider what this would mean if it was applied to other processes used today.

No modern computer would function
270 million wrong credit card transactions
Don’t even think about getting on an airplane!

I think by now you have probably gotten the point. The thing to consider is this. How much money would you be making if every 999,997 people that listened to your music wanted to hear more!

Youth Group: More than Average Indie Act

The Youth Group were implicitly known to Australia when the American teen television drama, “The O.C.” selected it and started playing the band’s cover of  “Forever Youngby Alphaville constantly for the entire season. It is a real embarrassment if you throw them into the emo dumpster or if you grasp this against them because this group got more things working for them than the other bands within the O.C. soundtrack.

At last, the indie rockers are getting much-deserved recognition after years of opportunity acts to visiting artists like Elliot Smith, Death Cab For Cutie, and Coldplay. Since they are being featured, The O.C. won an ARIA award for Breakthrough Single for the cover song in 2006, and definitely raised their band profile.

It’s difficult to point out what makes the Youth Group stand out. Is it Toby Martin the songwriter / lead singer’s melancholic, endearing vocals? Is it the wonderful music that sounds both sad and sunny at the same time? Whatever the real reason for it, the band offers fine emo.

The Youth Group’s most distinguished works are their second and third albums, respectively. You could depict comparisons and notice the band’s development, thus, it is suggested to listen to both. The second album Skeleton Jar from their Ivy League Records of 2004 was halfhearted, and the sales were also average. The band had until now to sharpen their beats and there is barely any disparity in tempo and structure. The song “Shadowland” however, is clearly the piece that saves their second album and you get the sense that they are at last stepping in the right course on how their music be.

Youth Group’s album number two proved a huge channel to Casino Twilight Dogs (Anti Records, 2007), the band’s more refined venture and most commercially successful. The music from this album sounded more accurate, harmonizing delicate elements from Martin’s lyrics and vocals with soft rhythms accompanied by lively guitar play. This album triumphs with a set of songs that would touch you to hit the repeat button. There is the “Daisychains” that makes you feel like to weep without even knowing why. The amazingly deceptive “Sorry”, an appetizing treat of irony enclosed with pop. The “Start Today Tomorrow”, which completely describes the wonders of idleness. And, even the more serious “The Destruction of Laurel Canyon” that shares about the 2005 California landslides, is emotionally stunning.

The Youth Group’s third album shimmers and shines with all the notes properly fixed to its right place. It is considered a great album to search out the band more. It is great to spare a time to listen to their music.

To those who are fans of the slighter known 80’s British band, the Youth Group will be your friend in the music world.

How Can I Use Myspace Music Marketing And More Plays For Offline Music Promotion Purposes

While many musicians have a Myspace page devoted to their band and their music, most of those musicians do not use it to its full potential. Granted, Myspace is a great place to connect with friends and fans, upload songs, sell merchandise, and a host of other really terrific services and capabilities, but the main point of Myspace that many overlook is promotion beyond the internet.

The best way to gain attention offline is the same as you would online, by using play counts. Play counts are a ranking system used to rank the popular musicians whether they are Unsigned, Indie, or on a major record label.

These music charts are first organized by genre and then overall for the entire site. The higher the total Myspace play counts, the higher up the ranks your group or band will reach. Many musicians, including those on major record labels, are turning more and more to promotional tools to aid their rise in the music charts.

In light of just how important these total play counts really are, make sure you select a service or software that has been proven and was developed with the aim of helping musicians reach the desired play counts in a natural manner which produces terrific results.

These results do not only garner the attention of fans, peers, and even important executives in the music industry, they can be used to promote your band through magazines, television, radio, and other forms of media.

Most of the larger cities, and even the smaller towns, have a local newspaper or magazine. These print media are always looking for stories about local people who are doing something of interest. While starting at the bottom and not going straight for Rolling Stone may seem a waste of time, it really is the best way possible to gain attention at this stage, at least before Rolling Stone magazine notices your band.

With an impressive Play Count, your local magazine and newspaper will surely be more than happy to interview you and your band. Getting your band in print, and circulating among tens of thousands of people, is only the first step.

Word of mouth will take hold from there and continue to spread news of your music. More likely than not, if you were to show up to the local magazine or newspaper office without an impressive play count, the editors will only ask you to leave. However, with high play counts and a spot in the Myspace music charts, preferably a higher spot than the bottom three, you will gain the editors attention and interest.

It is even possible to use high play counts to get jobs other than the one at the small bar on the outskirts of town. Bars, pubs, and other venues, especially ones that primarily deal with local and underground bands, book their talent by how popular they are. This way, you’ll ensure that there will be a decent crowd and a decent chance of doubling and tripling their nightly profit.

Keep this in mind as you approach a venue in which you would like to perform. Show them your play count and guarantee that you are popular and worth their time. Again, this can only be done if you have a high play count number. The higher this number, the more likely the venue will agree to let you play. These venues will be an important step to your bands future and gaining fans.

Now, these are just two examples of how Myspace can help you beyond the internet. Myspace is an important tool in elevating your status and popularity in the music world and while it is certainly possible to gain recognition and a record deal through Myspace, it is best to not just wait around for that possibility.

Local media and venues will be more than happy to spread the word about your band when it is popular, so use this fact to your advantage as well. Simply because you are on Myspace does not mean that anyone will take you seriously, you have to have the play counts to back up your boasts.

Use your imagination when promoting your band and use your popularity on Myspace as a guarantee of your skill and capabilities. Along with the site, these offline attempts will help boost your popularity and the number of your fans.
