Like many musicians, waiting for a record label to find you can take a long time and even then, it may not be worth it. Instead, musicians are taking matters into their own hands and selling music by promoting it on MySpace. Since MySpace reaches millions of viewers each day, chances are you will be able to sell your music, make a profit, and create a fan base without needing to sign a recording contract.

Being your own boss

Without a recording contract, you will be able to choose the songs for your CD, the order of those songs, and when you want to record them. You will also be able to design cover art, inside pages, and other merchandise you may want to sell in conjunction with the CD or music downloads.

You will also be able to choose if you want to strictly sell songs that can be downloaded or if you want to record an actual CD.

You can choose to sell your music in different ways by creating a web site where people can download songs, or working with third-party distribution web sites that will take of packaging and shipping. Promoting your CD or downloadable songs on MySpace is a great way to generate interest. Make sure you include the URL of the site that is selling your music so fans will know where to go.

Cost of releasing your music

The cost of selling your music is much less expensive than it used to be. While you don’t have to produce a CD, many musicians do anyway as a way to show their professionalism and so they can sell the CD at local gigs and events. Radio stations and other broadcasters need CDs in order to play them on the air.

When looking for web sites to package and distribute your CD, find ones that are popular or ask advice from other musicians who have gone the same route. You may have to raise money for these costs by playing extra gigs, or selling downloads first, but it will be worth it. Use MySpace as a way to generate interest, get advice, and find out more information. There are many forums that can help answer any questions you have.

Creating a band web site

While MySpace is currently working on building a storefront where musicians can sell their merchandise directly on the site, you may have to create your own web site and sell your CD there until this new feature is up and running. But that doesn’t mean you cant advertise on MySpace, work with other musicians to cross-sell music, or find other ways to promote your sound.

A band web site should be an extension of your MySpace profile page. Include your web site on your profile page so fans will know where to go when they want to buy a CD, see additional photos, or find out where you will be playing next.

MySpace is a great way to promote your music and help your CD or downloadable songs sell even faster. The internet is a large landscape, but with a little help from MySpace, you will be able to let fans know where they can buy your music and learn more about your sound.

If you were to write down the names of all the bands and artists that exist or existed in America, you would probably take a lifetime and yet not be able to get them all. There are just so many! Being a member of a band or being an artist is something almost everyone has tried to be. The success of American Idol has already proved that this point is true.

Usually bands and artists are differentiated depending on the kind of music they make. So we have rock bands, pop bands, ‘boy’ bands, surf bands, punk band, and even the wedding bands are qualified as bands. Same when it comes to artists. It is interesting to note that when you think of bands, it’s not so much about the members that you think of but the music. The band or the artist is just a representation of the music that we enjoy. The music is always inside us. The bands and artists just sing it for us.

Different types of bands and artists not only make different kinds of music, but they also make music differently. Depending on how the members sing and what kind of instruments they play as well as what kind of music they like, the final product (song) that a band makes will be unique and one of its kind. The most interesting thing about bands is that although each member has a unique voice, this is very hard to identify in the song. A song by a band always seems to have just one voice, as if sung only by one person. The truth is that the song is sung by different voices, all at different pitches. But a good band has the ability to make different voices sound like one voice. This is when a band can harmonize.

This can at times also creatively inhibit a band, since the song must be liked by each member before it is made. This is difficult since everyone has varying preferences and when it comes to music, most people (singers included) cannot define why exactly they like a song. A band sometimes makes multiple songs, one after the other before they finally pick one song which they all will like. One might think of this as a compromise of an individual’s preference, but then that is in the nature of the band. A band is a whole and individual members are only parts. Thus the identity of the band is always stronger than that of its members.

Bands and artists have it differently when it comes to making music. Artists are free to experiment since they are independent of any other person’s preferences. Their likes and opinion are all that matter. This desire to be free and make exactly the kind of music that one wishes is what often drives band members to have solo careers or albums sooner or later. (As an artist it is very hard to keep your music inside you for very long). Yet many bands have lasted very long. This is because over a period of time members begin to make the ‘band’s music. They are able to relate better to their music as a band and also find a way to keep their individual tastes alive while blending them with the band’s music. Different voices, yet one sound.

I would like to take a moment to recognize all the Indie musicians out there. Amazingly, 20+ years ago it was not quite as easy to make it as an Indie musician. Luckily, for these folks, the new millennium has brought about many opportunities for these artists to make it big in the music industry without the assistance of a major record label or company. This is possible today because the music promotional ideas out there are limitless.

In case you are not familiar, an “Indie” or independent artists is one that is not affiliated or connected to any major label. There are basically two types of Indie musicians, ones who are waiting to get signed and those who don’t care if they ever do. Indie musicians who don’t care to be signed generally enjoy the do-it-yourself approach and use the available musician resources.

But why wouldn’t every musician want to be signed to a major label? And, are there other ways in figuring out how to promote your CD? Well, times they are a changing…If one is not signed to a record label, they are allowed more creative freedom and don’t have to answer to anyone. They pick their songs, they record them at will, they wear what they want and they play where they want. For some musicians, this is the life that they choose. Not everyone feels they need to be tied down to one particular label or company. As they say, to each their own…

There is such a thing as an independent label which are great musician resources. An independent record label operates on its own, without the funding of a larger, major label, traditionally. Then there are the independent labels that are started by established artists but typically are associated with a major label in some sort of way.

Another perk that Indie musicians experience these days, stems directly from technology. Historically, artists depended on major labels for help recording records and distributing them as well. Now, it is possible for Indie musicians to succeed on their own given they have the right talent and a true desire to succeed. It isn’t as expensive to record music, make CDs and distribute them online and to the world. Major labels are not the only people who know how to promote your CD.

Doing it yourself in the music industry and succeeding is absolutely within any artist’s reach. Hard work, determination and taking advantage of all the available resources out there is exactly the way to do it. It is o.k. if your goal to eventually to be signed but there is also no shame in doing it yourself.

Most independent artists and music enthusiast wants to get a head start of what the music world is all about. While there are still some events, updates, issues and review, existing in the music industry, there is no doubt that any independent artist interested in music can be heard and known as long as they know how to play well in the industry. Some express music creativity for fame, while others do it as a hobby. Whatever their intentions are, independent artists do their craft as a general expression of themselves. They will be heard if they know the world on how their craft works and how they can survive.

There are many avenues for one’s music creativity. Most of which are provided not only for work but also for entertainment such as theaters, movies, or as independent performance. There are certain groups who accommodate one’s creative expression and when good, it creates popularity. Most independent artists search for these opportunities wherever they can find. Independent artist can do well in the competitive world of artistry when they are equipped with knowledge on how to go about with selling their expressions and capturing the interests of the public.

In the music world, independent artists can look into several resources where they can get knowledge on how music industry works. These resources provide knowledge to independent artists on the stand of other workers in the music industries who provides possibility on how to make an independent artists’ craft succeed. One of these resources can be seen in Music Biz site online. Music Biz provides articles related to the music industry. The articles are opinions and analyses that come from the players in the music industry such as artists, producers, recorders, music marketers, music distributors, music enthusiasts and other contributors from the music world. Independent artists and other interested music lovers can capture the thoughts of these music insiders by the way they express their opinions in the articles.

Articles contributed to Music Biz are scrutinized and edited well to meet the standard of how the articles should be presented. Articles are required to be specific in terms of music events and situations that support the comment or opinions. Generality does not provide the needed knowledge of the readers in the music world. Since articles are more of opinion or comment rather news, Music Biz requires that contributors should be reasonable and logical in their observation, experience or own point of view of a certain subject concerning the music industry. Writers are also encouraged to write new perspectives, issues, and events in their articles to add to the spool of articles already in the site. Lastly, Music Biz encourages contributors in the music world to be identified so they can be known and establish their credibility among readers. However, if the writer wishes to be anonymous, especially when discussing critical issues or events, Music Biz will also respect that.

Music lovers, independent artists and other music players can learn from the articles in Music Biz. It will help them set their pace and understand what music enthusiasts think about what is going on in the music world.

Indie or pop artists are somewhat independent artists, whose music does not comply with the trends of the common commercial music industry. Their music genre is thus, what makes them stand unique from the rest of the music fraternity.

To understand in better way, let us explore as how and why this trend of pop artists started. Indie artists started as aggressive bands during 1970s. They made music and songs for people, who shared similar ideology as theirs. The trend passed on and now, there are numerous pop artists in the music industry.

Most of these artists resemble to the unsigned bands. These artists often go on self-financed world tours, where local gigs help them to organize concerts in their cities. They simply make their own music using easy recording systems, computer software and the Internet. These unsigned bands do not have artist managers. Sometimes, the lead singer or the main band member works as the artist manager and looks after the entire concert.

More and more music enthusiasts are turning to this genre of music because these artists do not have any obligation of contract or whatsoever, and that they can make music of their interests.

How Do They Promote Their Talent?

Indie artists of the unsigned bands do not approach any recording label in the music industry. Instead, they supply their music CDs to their fans and other individuals on demand. Indies artists often work in close association with one another.

These artists even have their own web sites through which they advertise their music, inform the fans about the upcoming tours and so on.

Once the music is acclaimed, it automatically finds its way through radio stations, televisions and people need to place their order on the indie artist’s web site. The ownership and the copyright of their music remain with them.

However, new generation of the unsigned bands and indie artists from big cities are breaking away from this traditional trend. They are hiring artist managers to handle and promote their music genre.

No matter what, the popularity of such artists is increasing and they top the popularity charts frequently.

Musicians develop their own labels for many different reasons. My reason is partly because of a challenge I took on at a young age, to take what I was told was an unmarketable instrument, the violin, and create music that expressed emotions, touched hearts, and ultimately, sold. Whatever the reason for creating their own labels, musicians sometimes forget the advantages they hold and focus instead on the multitude of challenges.

As a gentle reminder to artists as well as their potential customers, I’m sharing my personal favorite reasons why I enjoy having my own label, and why music lovers should consciously choose to buy music from independent labels.

1. Independent musicians can freely express their passion and unique talent. They can express their own personal stories, follow their own instincts, and not have to follow orders from major label executives as to what they must create. From the customer’s perspective, by exploring radio stations and other sources of independent music, they too are now free to make their own decisions as to what is hot and what is not.

2. Many of the common music distributors only offer music from major labels, and rarely do they give anything for free, no matter how many albums you download or cds you buy. An independent artist is free to be unique and generous in his sales methods. For the consumer, this can mean getting bulk discounts, coupon offers and appreciation for their repeat purchases.

3. The independent musician can communicate directly with the customer, so online sales doesn’t have to feel like an isolating experience for the artist. Many times the thrill of receiving an email directly from the musician can turn an independent label music purchaser into a devout fan.

4. Niche marketing is all the buzz these days, and nowhere is it more successful than in independent music. As an independent musician, you are free to create your own unique niche and, in the process, reach more ideal fans. As someone who buys music from an independent label, you can find it easier to discover the music that defines and expresses YOU as well.

5. By buying from independent labels, customers and musicians can share the love. Think of it this way, here’s one scenario. A music lover makes a purchase. The independent musician has total control over what is communicated in the thank-you message. The customer can write back. The musician can quote the customer in his blog, the customer basks in the glory of the personal mention and shares it with all his friends on his Facebook page. Backlinks abound. Try that when you purchase from a major label.

6. Everyone feels more authentic. A MySpace page is more authentic than a billboard. A blog is more authentic than a press release. As an independent musician you can replace corporate communications with the real you, and your fans can comment on your webpage and get a direct response from you with their name on it.

7. At a time when many music retailers are closing their doors, customers can find their favorite independent musician’s music by buying it directly from the artist. Musicians with a well defined niche and loyal, avid fans can remain untouched by the ups and downs of the retail music industry.

8. An independent musician can develop his own website presence based on his own unique personality and style. Fans can hang out in a place where they can listen to new music clips, socialize, watch video performances, buy music, and share and build upon each other’s excitement. Everything is in one place, and they can discover a new musician or song, leave their comments, bookmark the site, make a purchase, and make new friends, all at the same time.

9. Musicians get a bigger cut from the sale of their music. This may seem obvious, but if customers could see the portions their favorite musicians receive from major labels, they would make more effort to support independent musicians, and buy from independent labels.

10.Indie musicians can band together to support each other and further their own causes, in organizations such as Association of Independent Musicians, or Rock the Net, only two examples. Major record labels often limit what their artists can do or not do. Consumers can not only support the music they love, they can affiliate themselves with causes they believe in.

There are of course other reasons to buy music from independent artists, but this is a great list to get you started thinking in that direction.

This clip is taken from the special features of the DVD for the documentary film “What is INDIE?” (www.whatisindiemovie.com). The DVD has over an hour of special features, including Advice from Derek Sivers (CD Baby), Panos Panay (Sonicbids), David Wimble (Indie Bible) and others, as well as Featurettes, Resource Listings and a hilarious Blooper Reel! In defining what it means to be ‘indie’, as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, “What is INDIE?” ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide. ******************************* Without any prior background in film (except for watching Super-Size Me “way too many times”) and funded entirely with his own credit cards, Montreal director Dave Cool has taken the film from a small do-it-yourself project and turned it into an indie success story in its own right that continues to turn heads in the music and film industries, even catching the attention of CNN.com, Newsweek Magazine and Canada’s National Film Board.

Whether you are a fan of indie music or an independent musician yourself, you have no doubt noticed the number of indie artists who have been using the social networking websites like MySpace to increase their exposure. If you’ve ever wondered what some of the benefits are of doing this, or even how to tap into these powerful networks yourself, please read on.

First, keep in mind that MySpace actually encourages any and all recording artists to join the network, share their music and even actively market themselves on their website. MySpace frowns on many types of businesses using their network to market through – but musicians are one group that is exempt from this. They want to give you exposure and help you build your fan base.

Because of this, creating a presence on MySpace is something every indie artist should consider. Not only are there literally millions of people there just waiting to be introduced to you and your music, but MySpace also provides you with the tools you need to reach out to them quickly and easily.

For starters, once you’ve created a free MySpace account, you can create a webpage on the network to describe yourself and your music. You can also add pictures and most importantly you can upload samples of your music for anyone to listen to. If you have video from your shows, you can even put those clips on your page so people can listen and watch you perform.

Of course, you could do the above on any website, but MySpace is not just any website. Once your page is live, it will be actively promoted throughout the network. You will be listed in the appropriate music categories and potential new fans can find you while searching. You can also use the communication features of MySpace to communicate with the millions of other people there and tell them about your music. If interested, they can join your friends network. Your friends network can quickly become a very powerful promotional tool, since you can use it to instantly let everyone know about your latest release or the time, date and location of your upcoming gigs.

Savvy independent musicians also make sure to offer special benefits to those in their network who help spread the word about their music. Offering tokens of appreciation such as free music, tickets or t-shirts is a great way to get your MySpace friends to introduce their friends to your network. Methods like these can help you quickly identify even more potential fans and virally increase your exposure.

Especially for indie artists, sharing the work they create without having deal with expensive large scale corporate media promotions is important. By tapping into the free resources on social networking sites like MySpace, musicians get access to high-tech tools and a large audience. At the same time though, the promotion still operates at a grassroots level – through person-to-person networking and word of mouth.
